EORI Number Application Service

EORI stands for “Economic Operators Registration and Identification number”. You may need an EORI number if your business is involved in import – export of any goods.

To be specific, you may need an EORI number if you are importing or exporting any goods,

  • between Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) or the Isle of Man and any other country (including the EU)
  • between Great Britain and Northern Ireland
  • between Great Britain and the Channel Islands
  • between Northern Ireland and countries outside the EU

You will also need an EORI number if you wish to register for an export licence on SPIRE.

However, you do not need an EORI number if you are moving goods that are ‘not controlled goods’ or for personal use only. For a list of controlled goods click here.

Where is an UK EORI number required?

If you are an import – export trader or you frequently need to move the goods then you may need an EORI number for making Customs Declarations. Customs and other authorities use EORI number to monitor and track shipments coming into and out of the European Union.

What is the format for an EORI number?

The EORI number consists of: the country code of the issuing member state followed by your VAT number (If you are VAT registered) + 000. If you are not VAT registered then the VAT number will be replaced with a unique number or code. Which type of EORI number you should use depends on where you’re moving goods to and from.

For example, if you move goods to or from Great Britain you must get an EORI number that starts with GB. (For example: GB243567834900)

If you’re moving goods to or from Northern Ireland you should get an EORI number starting with XI. Not having correct EORI number can create delays in your consignment to be released by customs department.

How long does the EORI application takes to be processed?

The process of making an EORI number application is online and usually it takes 2 to 3 hours to complete. However, the time required for the application to be processed can be more in case HMRC needs to perform any additional checks.

Once your EORI number application has been processed, you will be able to check your EORI number using EORI number checking service.
